Rabbits are small mammals from the family of Leporidae which have long ears, long hind legs for running, strong claws for digging and for defense, and short tails.

A group of rabbits is called a colony or nest,  while where they inhabit is called a warren. Baby rabbits reproduced by a mother rabbit at a time are referred to as a litter and a group of rabbits living together is sometimes called a herd.

Rabbits can eat blackberries, also called bramble, but only in small quantities. When they are fed too many blackberries, it has an unpleasant effect on their health, especially for young rabbits, hence, they should only be fed to them once or twice a week, more like a treat, than a full course meal.


Note also that they can only be fed ripe blackberries as unripe ones are not fit for them. The ripe ones are usually black or dark purple, while the unripe ones are sometimes green, or reddish-pink.

However, it is safer to not serve your young rabbits with blackberries, especially if they are less than 7 months old, as their digestive system cannot handle fruits yet.

Disadvantages of feeding blackberries to rabbits : 

As good as blackberries are, they can be harmful to rabbits if they are fed in too much quantity. If the plants have pests, or weeds, or are withered and unfresh. It can harm the rabbits as they are very delicate animals.

Rabbits are at risk of contracting diabetes if they feed on too many blackberries, because of the high glucose level. Pudgy rabbits should not be fed blackberries at all because they’re at higher risk. 

They are equally prone to dental diseases or bloating sequel to the high water content in blackberries which could lead to severe dehydration.

  • Select and pick only fresh, ripe blackberries.
  • Wash the skin/back properly and thoroughly.
  • Dish on a clean plate or bowl.

How Often Should I Feed My Bunnies Blackberries?

Blackberries for rabbits are meant to be a treat, not a proper meal, as they get most of their full nutrients from other foods like hay, hence, one big blackberry or two small ones, at most, will do.

And it shouldn’t be more than twice a week. They should also not be mixed with other fruits. It is healthier to feed just one fruit per week to your rabbit as feeding them with more than one fruit concurrently can make them ill.

Frozen blackberries are also safe to be eaten, but you should be careful as some rabbits might not tolerate the coldness
